First Night

She woke up one night

With an eternal loss, for an unknown gain

She looked at us with her bewildered eyes

While we were about to greet her goodnight

She sat on her tiny little grave and wept the pain away

(In the land of no disguise)

O Mama, can you hear me?

Can you hear me cry?

I went on to tell her

It wasn’t the same anymore

The night won’t let her escape to her Mama’s arms

But she was shaken to her core

A spirit’s first night…

I could see her pain

And a will to sustain, those tears her cheeks wore

So I offered her some beautiful flowers

Laid down to offer peace to the ones slain

On her tiny little grave, she wept, despite our gesture

(In the land of darkest hours)

O Mama, can you hear me?

Can you hear me cry?

I went on to tell her

It wasn’t the same anymore

The night won’t let her escape to her Mama’s arms

But she was shaken to her core

A spirit’s first night…

She looked at our faces with a hint of doubt

With the brightest smile we wanted to see

With the innocence she was all about

She asked the toughest question to me

Oh, why can’t my Mama hear me cry?

Why won’t she hear me cry?
